Things with a Soul
What if the products we use in our daily lives had their own emotions, feelings, and opinions? What would they think about us? Could they disagree with the way we use them and make their own decisions? In other words, what if objects had a soul?
"Things with a Soul" was chosen as the theme for the final project in the "Open-source Hardware and Programming" class in 2024. With such a topic, the first challenge for many students was to step out of their comfort zones and embrace the uncertainty of an unknown, unreal, and unusual challenge. The driving question proposed to the class was: “How might we create an electronic device that shows the soul of an everyday object?” While unusual, the students soon realized the infinite possibilities and opportunities for design unfolding before them.
The expected outcome was for each group of five students to design and fabricate a device, including an Arduino electronic prototyping board and an integrated system of inputs and outputs. The final goal was for a user to feel the "soul" of the object through interaction with the device.
To understand the topic and generate useful insights, the students (mainly in their first year) were guided through simple design thinking exercises. Having a brainstorming session with 100 young designers simultaneously generating keywords about "everyday things" and "emotions/feelings" was quite an interesting experience! Later, with the collected keywords—ranging from "hairdryer" to "bicycle", and from "happiness" to "disappointment"—we used AI to help write a story featuring one of the objects and one of the emotions. This allowed each group to expand their imagination and explore the many aspects in the life of, for example, a Sad Microwave. From this point on, generating ideas for interactive devices became a matter of selecting the most intriguing one.
The results exceeded our wildest expectations. From a technical perspective, most of the projects survived the week-long exhibition intact, with only a few experiencing minor issues, such as buttons falling apart, glue not holding, or fragile parts breaking. From the standpoint of usability, interaction effectiveness, and the ability to convey the "soul" message, each project demonstrated a clever and imaginative way to achieve the desired result.

We recorded videos to document the functionality of each device and eventually decided to create a collection of funny and quirky clips inspired by the multitude of emotions and feelings our everyday objects might display—if they had a soul.
